They are poisonous.

There is some debate over the toxicity of Poinsetta plants. Most nursery people I talk to say that it is, but if you look on line, you will find that there is no scientific evidence for this. When I work with mine, I have found that getting the white sap in a scratch causes some irritation (it burns slightly), but other than that, I don't have any personal experience with it being toxic.

Why take a chance, though? Keep the plants away from the cats.

Here is the deal - when you search online, you will come across BOTH - but the most convincing one I listed below.
Poinsettias - while stomach upsetting - are NOT POISONOUS to cats or humans when ingested.
Face it, cats will vomit after eating grass (does not make it poisonous though), and apparently Poinsettias got a bad rap after a falsely claimed death in 1919 of a 2-year old child.
Anyway - as with any plants, keep them away from your pets, but apparently we can all stop worrying about poisoning our beloved cats by accidentally having them ingest half a leaf. See below - even the aspca has it on their site. Easter Lilies are a different story. Careful with those. Happy Holidays!

Each holiday season there is the perennial question , "Is the Poinsettia plant poisonous?" There has never been any medical documentation or scientific evidence to substantiate the poison myth, it has scared people into the misguided belief that if ingested by humans it could be lethal. In addition the American Medical Association reports that there have been no deaths or serious injuries caused by the ingestion of poinsettias.ALSO.. this same information pertains to animals

Does your cat have a habit of eating flowers? Maybe you shouldn't get any. In the past we've gotten poinsettias and the cats were fine... but they didn't generally eat flowers.

Whatever you do, don't get stargazer lilies. Their pollen is poisonous to cats and can kill them.

Yes, it is poisonous. I would avoid using tensil on the tree too. It can get bound in their intestines.

It'll make them vomit, but it won't kill them. My cats have never tried to eat my poinsettias, but then they don't climb on the tables where I put them. Just put them where they can't reach them easily.
