many things can cause a rich running car. On a Ford of that age I will give you a few areas of concern. A leaking fuel injector,(excess fuel will drip) High fuel pressure, An oxygen sensor bias lean, ( causing a false lean condition and the engine does all it can to increase the fuel into the mixture with no visible change). Also a skewed map sensor will cause a rich condition on this vehicle, if it is reading a higher load than there actually is.

The usual cause of this is; The injectors get clogged up and don't close all the way. They stay open some all the time, thus leaking fuel into the engine all the time causing it to get really bad gas mileage. Having the injectors cleaned will work wonders for this problem, and what you save in fuel will pay for the injector cleaning. As a quick fix, you can run injector cleaner in your fuel tank. Get it down to about 3/4 of a tank, and add a bottle of STP injector cleaner in the "BLACK" bottle. I run a can of it in my car about every month, and it keeps them working good and the power up on the engine. Try changing the Air Filter too. A leaking pressure regulator can also cause this.
Glad I could help. Good Luck!!!

Pull and plug the vacumn line on the pressure regulator on the fuel rail start the the car watch the regulator where the vac. line goes on if you see fuel get it replaced and definetly get the oil changed because the excess fuel washes past the rings and dillutes the engine oil

Running rich is usually a sign that there is not enough air/fuel mixture going through your engine. I would check the air filter and see if the air is getting in properly. Then I would check to see if the choke might not be stuck closed. Ok I should have said throttle valve opening properly....
