the different names come from the following sources:

bharat : from the name of prince bharat who was the son of shakuntla. he is the ancestors of kauravas and pandavas

hindustan : given by the muslim invaders who finally setteled here since the natives were mainly hindus

india : from the indus valley civilization, one of the 1st civilizations of the world.

Some four thousand years back a king named Bharatan ruled the present India(+pakistan) along with many parts of Myanmar and Afghanistan after his death the above mentioned regions where called "Bharat".After the muslim invasion only the present India(+pakistan) were occupied by Hindus the rest of the regions by muslims so to differentiate between the Hindus rule from muslim regions it was called as "Hindustan".When the British rule our country people of all religion were united in getting the freedom from them.So certain leaders felt that it would not be nice to call our country by the name of a particular religion so Hindustan was renamed as India.

I don't know about Bharat, but as India we are recognised as a nation, a country. As Hindustan, we are recognised as a state, a half, not a whole. But sometimes, we are recognised as Hindustan because we are also a nation. Either way, always recognise India as your country, thoomara Hindustan.
