Wife and I found a 1944 penny with a large number five engraved across the front. We were wondering if this was just something stupid someone did at some point or if this was a collectible in any way? Any help would be appreciated.

It was not uncommon for companies in the past, to mark numbers on coins and use them as a token. It could stand for #5 key to #5 bin. Most of the time it is impossible to find out just why it was marked with a number. If it was engraved it was done for a reason. If it was punched, it just could be a person was trying out his new #5 but bet it was used as a marker some how.

The millions of white pennys they made. Copper was short in ww2, so they used things like lead to make em. Sounds like somebody stamped the 5 on yours. They are actually worth maybe 2 cents apiece without the 5.
