"Under The Bridge" is awesome, and "Give it Away" is great, but apart from that all the rest of their material sounds the same to me. And if you're not a fan of homoerotic funk-rock, it tends to grate.

RHCP are a prime example of a band (or artist) who created some fantastic work, then gave up the drugs* and became rubbish parodies of what they had been before. If they'd all died** after BloodSugarSexMagick, they'd have been immortal. But now they're just past it. For other examples see Robbie Williams, Elton John, and - best/worst of all - Aerosmith.

* Drugs are bad, kids. Don't do 'em.
** No, I don't wish them dead.

Pearl Jams album, ten, was an excellent record,one of my faves,but everything after was rubbish,so i would agree that they are over rated,because at their shows everyone goes mental for, Jeremey and Alive,off the said album and not much else. Queen are my shout for most overrated band for exactly the same reasons in your question,execpt maybe 1 or 2 songs and im not talking Bo Rap,pompus claptrap.

We all know that commercial boybands and pre-packaged pop acts are crap so I won't even bother mentioning those. I'll start on the "biggies":

In all honesty I'd have to say The Who, although I'll get crucified for this, especially by my BF.

Their songs just don't DO anything for me. Not one of them has a "shivers down the spine" moment or anything that would make me want to listen to them more than once. Most of them are fairly forgettable.

And yet people talk about The Who like they are God's Gift to music.

Pink Floyd are the same - overrated. I can't bear to sit through any of their songs, they just make me fall asleep.

I would also venture to suggest Fleetwood Mac can be a bit overrated as well. They are good, but aren't as mind blowing as people make out.

Don't tell my BF though as he'd go mad! He loves these bands!! LOL!

I also agree with djlover that Coldplay are vastly overrated. They are just airy fairy dross with no guts to it at all. Its just considered "cool" to like them.

I definately have to agree with you on the stadium pomposity. Though for most over-rated band of all time, my vote goes to Def Lepard. Every album looks and sounds the same. They followed a strict formula to commercial success and I just can't respect anyone who does that and has the audacity to call themselves artists.

i like Streetlight Manifesto and that i will certainly say that for the duration of their 2 albums there is no longer a million undesirable track. yet i assume there continues to be a worst track. i'd would desire to declare the worst is That'll Be the Day and that i nonetheless love that track. That only is going to show that Streetlight Manifesto is an astounding band.
