do taxi meters work properly. as per the advice of this forum, i took a taxi from kurla terminus to parel (kalachowki). the fare read 299 and with card (chart) came to 433 rupees. returning from the same spot at Kalachowki to Kurla terminusthe fare read 99 wih card rate at 152. whcih one is right? was i cheated ?. how to prevent it the next visit ?. also as mentioned in answers, there are no taxi queues in Kurla terminus. are there bus facilities from there ? thanks to all those who replied regarding how to get to VT from Kurla.it was really, really useful

By your incident, i feel that you were cheated, even if the taxi fellow charged you with by the night fare, you have paid a big difference, i think the best thing to do is to make a note of the taxi's number plate, the next time you use one, this is also helpful , incase you accidentally forget something in the taxi.

yes dude ur were cheated the best way is to first enquire from two three taxi wallas about the range of fare upto ur destination. chances are there some might tell you the correct range as some taxi owners are honest. When u get the lowest range then sit in it.
See ur new to mumbai and should do this where ever u go in it. It takesa lil time but saves u the money. Then once u know the price range next time u can catch hold of the cabbie who cheats u.

2. Always make sure the meter is reset to zero when you step in the cab . It will read 1:00 once reset. If in doubt make sure he rotates the meter completely once. Normally they start the meter before hand.
3. In case of a complaint please note the Car's registration number and the cabbie's licence no.
4. Avoid picking up a fight at the departure point. But certainly do pick up a justified quarrel at the destination. Mumbai police are normally very helpful. Inspite of whatever people say.
5. Note Tarrif for Cool Cabs are different.

You have been defenitely cheated. It appears that the taxi you took had a faulty meter, which was not recording correctly.
The Taxi Driver may have come to know that you are a stranger to Mumbai. He will not do such thing to a Mumbai resident..
