I mean, does the average criminal wake one day and decide, "Hm, shall I rape someone today or rob the bank?" Are they even aware of the consequences?

I think that something like raping a person can happen suddenly because it is hormonnal but planing a robbery it is something planned.
And how likely is anyone in doing so it depends in how much free time that person has. I mean if you don't have a job or any kind of occupation is easier than if you are a person trying to succed through your hard work.

Most of us, including me, are capable of almost anything if we are pushed too far. Why do you think many American soldiers were given poison pills to take if they were captured and tortured by the Japanese in WWII?

Of course there are minds that have been warped either by disease or abuse or a combination of both, They are easily capable of the most awful deeds most of us can't imagine doing because we have not been raised in their shoes.

A criminal is not born "one morning". He/she is shaped by genetics yes, but he/she is also mostly shaped by the love and feelings of integrity he is given as a child age 1-5.

Some people have been able to overcome bad raising and abuse and go on to lead super lives. Sadly, most have not been able to conquer the residue of their pain.

I think most are aware of the consequences too.
