As for the classics, l go for Liz Taylor's and Marilyn Monroe's movies. Obviously l'm a fan of them. Include also Gene Kelly and Gregory Peck. Some suggestions:
Cleopatra, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Singing in the Rain, Some Like it Hot, An American in Paris, Guns of Navarone, Citizen Kane, Rear Window, An Affair to Remember, Breakfast at Tiffany, Love Story, The Postman Always Ring Twice, An Officer and a Gentleman,Terms of Endearment
As for the new ones: Just get the super-heroes and you'll never go wrong and movies that won the best picture at the Oscar's
Hope l was of help. Happy viewing.:)

Anything Monty Python is good. Here is the link:
http://www.pythonline.com/

Corpse Bride
Pirates of the Caribbean
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
If you don't already own it, The Crow. Get that.
Ice Age is cute. Along with Shrek.
Men in Black
French Kiss
The Star Trek movies aren't bad.
Crazy People
Batman 1 and 2
X-MEN

Pixar/Disney is a good investment. Toy Story, Nemo, The Incredibles, etc.

Hope that helps.

this is really hard - I don't know you at all.
but go to amazon, put in some films you like and see what they come up with as your 'recommendations', the major film rental sites (lovefilm.co.uk for examples) will also do this.
