if you want to use a uk phone abroad with a uk sim card you'll need to ring your service provider and ask them to lift the international bar. this is called roaming. your provider should have a list of countries that your phone should work in, depending on the type of phone you have and their agreements with foreign networks
if you want to use a foreign sim card you'll have to have your handset sim-unlocked because phones are locked to a network by default. you can do this through your service provider or on the high street or a market. i imagine the later would be the cheapest option but depending on what type of phone you have, you may be able to find somewhere on the internet that will unlock it for free

In Europe and the USA yes.
Not in Asia, or phones are too low tech for their networks!

yeah you can if they are dual or tri band most good phones you buy will have this feature but dont buy a seimens as they have gone out of buisness and if it breaks you will never get it fixed

yes, dual band phones will work in Europe
tri band will work in Europe and the USA
quad band will work worldwide
