Normally the red goes to (+) positive, and the black goes to the (-) negative. Usually the (-) negative has another wire that is attached to the metal of the body or frame. If these are hooked up backwards it will result in a blown alternator. Hook the (+) positive up first, and then the (-) negative. When you remove them; unhook the (+) positive first, and then the (-) negative.

Normally red. Some older cars and tractors Have positive grounds. The positive terminal will be attached to ground.
I have found some cars have had the battery leads changed and both leads are black. The one that goes to engine or chassis ground is the negative lead

i could be wrong but i believe the red wire represents negative, and should thus be connected to the positive terminal. electricity flows from negative to positive. this means that when a battery is connected it will cause a current to flow from the negative terminal, which would need to be connected through the device and back through to the positive terminal to allow the voltage to push current through the circuit.
to me this means that the red wire is ultimately what is carrying the current back to the battery to complete the circuit.
IE, connect the black to the negative terminal first, then the red terminal to the positive terminal of the battery. in this way you are completing the circuit sequentially, and will always know the direction of current flow.
i am not a licenced electrician but i do study electronics. i hope this helps you but i do not guarantee it is correct. from reading the above comments it is pretty clear others on this thread dont know what they are talking about

Normally !!!Red to Positive+ and Black to Neg- or ground, in most cars. Follow the cable down to the connection on the frame.(Where it is bolted to the frame or engine, not the starter) this is your ground no matter what color. I have seen some cars using red cables as ground cables,because that is what they had on hand. Have a fun day.

Red is positive.
Put the black on the negative first, and put red on positive second. When removing the leads take the red off first, then the black.
The red is the 'live' so don't have the red on before you're grounded using the black.
