We in India have the study of acid rain in our curriculum. And the example cited is that of the Taj Mahal. This massive structure, now in the race for the new 7 Wonders of the World, is entirely made from marble(Calcium Carbonate). The oil refineries from nearby towns release sulfur dioxide in the air which comes down as acid rain.
You know how sulfuric acid and marble react. This is causing etching or pitting of the marble(formation of tiny holes), damaging the monument. People complain that the Taj is not as white as it originally was.
