Make the weave type pot holders or premix your cookie dough have the grandchildren help you by mixing in the nuts, or chips or what ever, then let them make it into rolls, wrap in freezer paper and marked what kind. Then send it home
with the children so that the poor working mother can spend some quality holiday time baking cookies with her children. That is satisfaction for everyone and easy to do with the grandkids. That way they have double the fun and double the bonding. The reason I say poor working mother is most mothers work nowdays

I've always had good results making and painting christmas cookies. You use any rolled cookie dough, cut and bake the cookies like normal. (You can imbed a loop of cheap cotton string in the top of each one of you want to hang them on the tree later.) After they are cooled lay them out on waxed paper.

Mix in several small bowls 1/4 cup confectioners sugar and just enough milk to make a thick liquid. It doesn't take much milk. In each bowl add a little food coloring so you have several different colors to work with. Put a seperate cheap paint brush in each bowl and let the kids paint. You can also use chocolate chips and M&Ms to make it more interesting. Let the cookies dry before doing anything else with them.
