The only exception to this rule is if a male deer has had an injury or his hormones are otherwise messed up. In some of these rare cases, the deer will not loose his antlers but keep growing them all year, and never loose them. This condition often results in what is known as a cactus buck(a buck that could have 70 or more velvet covered points). Also, species of deer other than whitetails may loose their antlers at different times. For example, the imported Axis deer can loose their antlers at anytime during the year. Concurrently, the Axis does can go into estrus any time during the year.

Once a year, but it's rare if you ever find any, the squirrels, chipmunks and small critters eat them, they are pure protein. Amazing how the animal world takes care of its own.
