Honestly, I have seen it end both ways. Usually the squirrel gets away from the cat because he climbs faster. And a squirrel can fight back more than you would think, biting and scratching. They can bite hard enough to get through nut shells, so you know they can bite hard. Most cats give up when one fights back. But a truly hungry cat that is used to hunting, say rats, would win. But if it is just doing that 'look what I can pounce on' thing, I think the squirrel would. I mean, a squirrel is just a rat with a fuzzy tail that likes heights.

in a true hunting scenario, the cat has all the advantages (mainly size and power) so if the cat's quick enough to get hold of him, I think he's got a good meal to look forward to.

As a kid we had several cats, they would bring home squirrel's, rabbits, moles, rats, snakes and so on.
My bet would be on the cat.
Hope this helps.
