accuracey pure and simple.dentures 90% of the time need them as they pick up the soft tissues better. but rouitiene crown and bridge work will probably get away with a normal stock tray

Stock tray is fine to use with many dental procedures. Custom tray take better impressions and normally used for fabrication of permanent restorations.
