You have to make sure there is plenty of litter in the box.
I had this same problem with my older female cat, I purchased a litter box with a hood & made sure the litter pan was at least half full of litter. It really helped, I suppose she just needed privacy.
Hope this helps.

We have four cats, three females and a male.
The females always cover up, but it took a while for the male to get the hang of it.
I showed him how to do it with the litter scoop and after about a month of me showing him every single time he pooped or peed he finally seemed to get that hang of it.
After talking to several other cat owners it seems that this is a common problem with male cats for some reason...they will cover, but it's almost like you have to teach them how!

I certainly have 3 cats.. 2 of them disguise theirs, however the oldest one on no account has and we've had her when you consider that she substitute right into a kitten, which substitute into 5 years in the past. i don't be attentive to why, I only discern she would not choose for to.

My 7 year old male does the same thing, exactly. I made the mistake of putting his box by a long mirror and he tried covering up the mess in the mirror first lol...I have another cat who will go in and clean that up for him, she's a wonder. Maybe you need another cat? haha...I just don't have the solution for you!

I can sympathize with you on that one.. I have 7 cats yeah wow!!! and 2 of them have issues with covering their poop..Not really sure why they do that. I have tried to show them ( of course with a pooper scooper ) how to cover it but they still do not cover their poop.. I finally just let it go and when the gross smell hit me I knew one of the mis-behaving kitties did it:) personally, I think its a lazy gene... lol.. or maybe they do it on purpose ... I am not sure but if you find out ,, Please let me know too...:)

One out of my 3 has this problem. And his crappies are really quite odious. One of my other cats is so bothered by it he will go and bury that poop!

You have a defective cat! Either that or he really likes the smell of his poop and wants to share it with others!

We have that issue with one of our kittens too. The one...OMG...HORRIBLE!! The other one has to go and cover it up. In terms of why, I think it has to go back to their mother. Perhaps the mother didn't have enough time to show them what to do? And it being male, and another answerer saying that it is typically male, perhaps he just didn't LISTEN to his mother enough!! ;-)
Our solution? We are toilet-training them.
