I hear the guitar is fairly easy to learn and I know lots of people that are self-taught.

I would say that a recorder would be a great place to start because you can buy them so cheaply (easily less than $10) and they usually come with instructions.
Following that, maybe a keyboard - again, you can get them without investing a ton of money (unlike a piano which would be much more expensvie). And, they usually come with instructions and you could get all kinds of neat other sounds to "go with" your own playing (like accompaniment chords, etc.)
A harmonica is another inexpensive and fairly easy to learn instrument that usually comes with some instructions and a few songs. The only disadvantage to a harmonica is that you can only play songs written in the key of the harmonica you purchased. Considering this, I'd start with a key of C harmonica which will limit you to fairly simple, easy songs, but probably bring you the greatest quick success, though limited. If you want to play songs written in keys other than C, you'd have to buy a harmonica for each key of each song you wanted to play. Personally, I took piano lessons as a kid and failed, guitar lessons several times as a young adult and failed (I found the "reach" of my fingers was too difficult), but then was finally able to really learn how to play the tenor banjo. I found the "reach" of my fingers to be much easier, but another factor was that I'd come to really LOVE banjo music and perhaps my motivation and dedication were much greater. Not sure why, but the tenor (4 string) banjo was the instrument with which I had the most success. Hope this helps.

An alternative to the guitar: the bass guitar. My friend taught himself how to play and he's pretty good. You can pretty much learn to play almost anything if you know how to read music a little.
If you're thinking more of band instruments, a good book for self teaching is Standard of Excellence. I used it for my dear instrument and I went from a total beginner to a semi intermediate in three weeks without any tutoring. It even teaches you how to read music along the way.

the first musical instrument is your voice, sing along with
recordings and buy some books or dvd`s. then get a keyboard.
you can learn the keyboard and voice at the same time.
practice scales with your voice, you will learn to sing in key with
the keyboard. if you don`t want to do that much get a harmonica
a great little inst. they call it mississippi-saxaphone for a good
reason.great books available to learn...have fun...

LOL...The recorder. Seriously if you really want to learn an instrument you need to get a teacher. And if you want to save a few bucks, well, the recorder is fairly cheap and takes like four minutes to learn...Have fun...

I would suggest either the guitar or the piano....there are lots of "learn to play" materials available and you can buy a guitar inexpensively or a key board for less than $100 to get started. Good for you.....and good luck.

Guitar is the easiest.
You only have to learn the chords.
You can play and sing at the same time.
Within one week you can learn the chords of a song.
I play guitar and learnt it by myself when I was still young.
The younger you are , the easier it will be for you to learn

Guitar. You could buy a songbook and learn from it, no need of a music teacher.

You can teach yourself anything if you can read and follow instructions. My best advice is to choose something that you like the sound of and go for it.
