For printing photos, you will probably want an inkjet printer, (but some of the 4x6 printers are dye-sublimation, which means they use a ribbon and thermal transfer instead of liquid ink, and they cost more to use) Many inkjets now offer archival ink and paper, so your prints will last longer than they would a few years ago.
If you are looking for a 4x6 printer, the Epson Picture-mate is hard to beat. You can hook it to your computer for more control, but you can also print directly from your camera card. They sell the replacement ink & paper in packs of 100, but I have found the ink will last for more than 100 prints, so I buy an extra pack of just paper to use. The ink will last for maybe 25 - 30 more prints.
If you want a printer to make bigger prints, Epson, Canon, and HP all have nice printers. I have had an Epson Stylus Photo before, I liked the output, but always had ink clogging and paper feeding issues. Now I have a Canon i6600, and so far so good. Makes amazing prints.
Be aware, the cost of printing is not in the printer itself, it's in the ink and paper. I always use OEM ink cartridges, although you can buy recycled ones from third party manufacturers at less cost. Usually you get better results from photo paper that comes from the printer manufacturer because the paper is profiled to match.
Good luck!
