moron and imbecile are permanant and in some cases terminal...while idiot and nincompoop more of a spur of the moment thing. (but, can also be terminal! LOL)

Not sure but cretin supposedly refers to people born with hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland in your neck). This condition gives an appearance as it makes such children have upturned eyes, as if they are looking at heaven. Cretin is dervied from the french word for christian (chretien). Idiot is derived from the latin "idiotes" meaning a person lacking skill/ an uneducated person.

I thing the different are quiet not much for some are thesame while others are close to been thasame. let me simply say:
An a moron is a real sickness that is close to madness.
Idiot is just a stupid person that cares not for respect.
An inbecile is a French word for idiot.
Nincompoop is careless person.

apart from spelling not a lot,
though to me, i would say theword imbecile is a much harsher word stupidity wise, and nincompoop is just when someone does something silly. whereas moron and idiot are words from people who do stupid things A LOT!

gosh - I'm not sure which one I am.
I don't watch X Factor, so I'm probably not a moron.
I don't watch I'm A Celebrity so I'm certainly not an imbecile
I don't watch Pop Idol so I'm definitely not a nincompoop
but I do answer the odd Yahoo question (& usually get given thumbs down) so I'm clearly an idiot.
Think you'll find the Oxford Dictionary lists them with similar meanings.
