Pale green walls, Blue ceiling. The ceiling should be darker than the walls to make the room seem bigger (wider).

I was in IKEA the other day and we came across a pale green room with white accessories. It was reall calming but warm at the same time. I would check out ikea for ideas because the room themes are really great. They have lots of different coloured rooms and i think you will get a great idea of the one that suits you best.
I prsonally get bored really easily so i like to keep the wall neutral like magnolia and the curtains in a creamy colour. You can add the colour with the accessories and using different textured fabrics. that way if you get bored of the colour it isn't a great expense to change.

Lilac or pale green - also the two colours go together. Keep the ceiling light as dark ceilings bring the height down. Don't clutter the walls with pictures but mirrors are a good idea - perhaps a large mirror on the wall facing the door as you walk in.

Paint your walls white, then mark out horozontal lines all the way around the room with a chalk line. 300mm (12" bands) and fill them in your desired colour, taupe is nice. It look great although im sure you might think its a bit wild but it will look great.
Your choice of colour will dicate if its calm or not, a soft natural colour will work

you need to stick with paler colours.
a nice lilac would be calming. if your in the UK, crown paints do a lovely lilac called rodeo drive. my hall an living room are both this colour and everyone comments how beautiful it is.
if you like the half and half look i would go for lilac at the bottom and a soft creamy colour at the top with either a border or wooden rail.
if you like the full wall look, i would go for two opposite walls lilac and the other two opposite walls cream.
Hope my opinion has helped you x

Light colours of any sort. White being the top when it comes to making a room appear bigger but will also give a very sterile feel unless you have paintings to put on the walls.

althou blue is calm it can be very cold, I've found that a lot of the homes I've decorated have benifitted from creams and lilacs there are many tones to choose, but if you want it to be warm then make three light walls say with cream, then make a focus wall with a much deeper colour or even patterend paper

If you are going to retain other items in the room -- curtains, bedspred, carpeting, painted furniture, etc -- the color you choose would have to blend with those other colors.
If you are starting from scratch you should choose a very light pastel, and add bolder colors that will complement the pastel for your accessories.

Greens and blues are the proven relaxing colors. Sage green is very popular right now and mixes with alot of other accent colors you might want to use (mauve, burgundy, white, for example). Have fun!
