The owners of a quarry in far East El Paso pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy to harbor immigrants for financial gain, concluding the first criminal prosecution of a business for employing undocumented immigrants in the Western District of Texas in seven or eight years, officials with the U.S. Attorney's office said.
Brothers Romulado Soto, 53, of Clint, and Jose Cruz Soto, 41, of far East El Paso County, both U.S. citizens, are scheduled to be sentenced in February. They face up to 10 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines. Their lawyer could not be reached.

In April, El Paso sheriff's deputies conducted a welfare check at Soto Rock Hauling, a quarry in the desert near Gas Line Road that produces rocks for rock walls. They found 25 undocumented immigrants working there.

Officers were tipped off by an undocumented driver they had stopped at a traffic checkpoint.

"He described how the owners of the quarry would contract with smugglers to bring aliens from Tornillo ... to the quarry, where the Soto brothers would pay the smuggling debts. The alien stated they then were required to work off such debt," court documents described. "While at the quarry, the aliens had lived in cardboard boxes, old trailers, sleeper boxes of old semi-tractors, and they had no running water, sanitation facilities or electricity. "

Prosecutors have said the case had elements of human trafficking. Even though the quarry had no gate or fence, it was remote and "there was no way for the aliens to easily leave without a ride being arranged for them," court documents showed.

According to the plea agreement filed Monday, the Soto brothers said they had knowingly hired undocumented immigrants for about five years

Yes, definitely this employer should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. This is one of the things I don't understand about supporters of illegal immigration - they are actually advocating the abuse of the people they claim to be in support of! Who, in their right mind, would be "all for" allowing people to be used by unscrupulous employers who can force them to work for less than minimum wage, for far more hours than allowed in our employment laws, and if the employer decides to cheat them of wages, they have no where to turn? Where is the reason in this?

Wow! I just read Andy's response (from Sweden) and I wish the USA could copy the way Sweden handles illegal immigration!

The employers have no choice. Liberals believe in an idiotic spiteful idea; they think the people who went out of their way to own a business would just take it in the rear over Obama's new taxation, and the employees would get some kind of weird arrogant revenge. That's not really the way it happens. The people with the business sense keep the place going and cut corners where necessary. My question is: When do they start blaming Obama?

It really sounds to me like slavery, which has been outlawed in this country for 140 years and I do think that the government has a duty to prosecute these people and all others that practice this. I think this is one of the best answers to the illegal alien problem, if you take away the work you take away the incentive to come here.

Heck yea punish them, Make the illegals leave and put the company out of business, put the ones responsible for bringing them here in a fenced in area in the desert and make them live in the cardboard boxes. Take plenty of pics and videos, send them to all the other companies that hire and cater to them as a warning, give them 5 working days to turn themselves in and get rid of the illegals. I sure can dream cant I?

This is one of two things that has to happen before uncontrolled immigration can get under control: (1) prosectution of employers -- and not just the easy targets like the above small business with no political clout and no big contributions to the Republifcans (and, for all I know, the Democrats too); they have to go after every company that hires illegals through contractors and then says they didn't know. And all the meatpackers and farmers, and never mind: http://snurl.com/pickers
and (2) an end to farm (crop) subsidies for corn, cotton, tobacco that US taxpayers pay and Agribusiness (and not family farmers) get -- and that, under NAFTA, lead to crops being DUMPED in Mexicoi, putting Mexican small farms out of business and making them fire millions of farmhands who -- unsurprisingly -- go to the USA to look for work to feed their families.

There are no ignorant, innocent people here: the reason Bush is soft on illegals is that his pals benefit. So the Government goes after one or two little guys -- who are certainly guilty, paying below-market wages to illegals. But the real guilty guys are the super-rich in slick, expensive suits who run major agricultural and industrial companies: farms, meatpacking, hotels, fast-food, construction, cleaning . . .

In my country (Switzerland) if you don't have a national ID card or a work permit, you don't work. End of story. Result: low crime, fair wages for all.

Yes all employers who hire crimaliens should be punished to the full extent. I live in the most tragically blue state(MA) in the union, so I know I'll never see thes ******* pay the proper price. What I can, and do take part in is punishing them with my dollar. I will do business with no company who hire crimaliens. Ever.

Absolutely! The employers should be locked up for the full 10 years and never allowed to run a business again.

not only are the using illegal aliens, they are in direct contact with the smugglers. If what is said is true, then yes, they need to go to jail and for a long time, because they took advantage of other peoples misfortunes.....

I say 'put em out of business'. They were operating in full breach of US labor laws, they should probably forfeit their entire business, especially if it's been ongoing.

The writing's on the wall for all these guys, hiring illegal aliens at cut-rate wages is no way to run a railroad. What did you think about that one guy, he ended up in the Big House for 12 years,
and all his illegal workers got deported? Good medicine, there...

Absolutely the employers should be punished but the illegals should not be rewarded because of ill treatment as our country is prone to do!
