There is no such thing as an ambulance driver (at least here in the US). In fact paramedics and EMTs take offense to the term. An on duty ambulance is staffed by a minimum of 2 emergency medical technicians (EMT). An ambulance can also have an EMT and a paramedic or 2 paramedics. The more paramedics the better.
EMT school is about a month long and you learn basic emergency care. Paramedic school is 9 months to a year long and you learn very advanced emergency care. At both levels you are required to be 18. For the paramedic certification a high school diploma or GED is required.
There is a lot of that "you need to be able to lift 250lbs" stuff but thats not really a national standard. The only national standard is a EMT or paramedic certificate and a drivers license.

Depending on the region or country, you will need a high school certificate, 'O' Level and above. You must have been driving for at least 3yrs (depending with the place) without any bad history. This is not an ordinary drivers licence but should be what is called a defensive driving licence. Notice that all conditions are dependant of your location; finally, you need a knowledge of life saving and first aid as a minimum requirement. You can always find out more from your local health provider. Training when you start is always on-going; they should provide it or you have to find where you can keep up-dated.

There are no ambulance drivers per se. Ambulances are either staffed by a minumum of an EMT, or one paramedic.Think about it, what good would an untrained driver be when he gets to the scene of a medical emergency?

I have many friends in this field. I know that here in Texas you must be at least 18 with a high school diploma or equivalent and have passed state EMT certification class. You also have to be able to read fine print and have the ability to operate under heavy stress. They also do a lift test that requires a person to lift 125lbs. unassisted and 250lbs with assistance. Drivers also have to pass a number of driving tests and may be required to know a section of streets that pertain to their area of service.Drivers will also be required to have an extensive background check that would include driving history. I know it sounds hard but if you are in decent shape and a relatively good person its really not that hard.
