Try different toothpaste. May be you can get a sample or small pack of different toothpastes and try out. Give the choice to the child. He will surely find some interesting paste.

It might well be the texture they don't like, go with the gell types, they also come in brighter colors. Go for a mild mint flavor.

There are dozens of different flavors and textures of toothpaste, take them to the store, and have them choose one, they are more likely to use it.

For what it's worth, I can't stand fruit flavored toothpaste either, it is too artificial and sweet.

Take the little one round to someone who has full set of dentures. Let them see the false teeth been taken out and let them observe how they look and talk with out the falsie's in. Especially effective if the person has just eaten cos all the saliva come with the dentures too. Yak!!

They'll be brushing away 4 times daily afterwards.

So, don't use it for the moment. It's the mechanical brushing effect which is more important than the paste.
When you do try again, only use a tiny amount at first.
And don't use mouthwashes for a child.

Trust me that child will hate dentures a lot more!!!
Try a different flavor or brand.
For that fact try some old home methods...
Baking soda
Salt
Peroxide
I am sure if you try any of these that child will welcome what ever you offer to them and appreciate it ever so much!!

It sounds as though its brushing their teeth they hate rather than the toothpaste.

Not surprised! Try changing it for 'Forever Bright Toothgel', much better for you and your kid as it isn't full of nasty chemicals like Fluoride.
