having grown up in Zimbabwe (which, yes, is in Africa), I can tell you that the africans do like mopani worms, they are somewhat of a delicassy and in fact, consider them a high nutrition food, however not the staple food. The staple food is more of a refined maize type starchy food called Sadza. I suppose they add whatever they can find to the sadza to make up the meal.

The worms are normally dried and can be sold loose or in packets, and used to be able to be bought at the supermarkets, however you actually can't get much at the supermarkets anymore... more information on the worms is below, however to answer the question of WHY they eat them - I suppose the answer is "because they like them" - ??

My parents are african I am too but i was born in the US. But in my country we dont eat worms or none of that. Its probably one of their customs or culture/ tradition that they are use to. Their are 52 countries in africa and each is different with what they eat and so forth. I am just glad that you went their and saw for yourself bc many people that never been to africa judges it based on TV or what they have heard.

These are a good source of protein. It is unusual food for us but to a lot of people in other parts of the world, it is nutritious, affordable and doesn't take as much resources to rear as other types of protein.
