My wife and me wanna visit HongKong sometime around the 2nd week of Dec '06 for about 5 days and then go to a nearby island for some snorkling etc. Can you guys recommend some nice, not-so-expensice island for us?

There are many islands in Hong Kong which itself is an island.
Lantau is the biggest and then there are Lamma Island and Chengchow which is very very small. They are not expensive to tour but the water and beaches will be mediocre at best for snorkling. The water around Hong Kong might not be warm enough for swimming in Dec. and not clear enough for good snorkeling. If you are visiting HK, spend more time touring and plan your snorkeling next time in the Phillipines instead where the conditions are far superior.
I grew up in HK and I am a licensed scuba diver as well.

Lantau and Lamma islands are very close, and easily accessible by ferry or the MTR (Lantau). There are some beautiful beaches and lush forested moutains just a few miles outside HK, which is always a surprise to most people visiting HK. On the two islands, there are several nice little fishing villages one hundred years away from central HK!

i live in hong kong
and i think the best places for tourist to go might be lamma island or lantau island
they hv lots of mini-resorts for tourists
and they are not expensive
=)
