I think I'd like to spend some time in Washington DC during late 1861 and early 1862. I'd visit the White House and meet President Lincoln, since he was generally available to visitors; perhaps I could give him some words of confidence or comfort, perhaps I could even advise him on ways to upgrade the water and sanitation at the White House, which might save his son Willy from dying of a fever.
I might become a friend of Walt Whitman, too. It was a trying time in our history, a memorable one to visit and experience, and to begin to understand.
