Also tried storing them in a card board box in a sheltered frost free place outside, but that didn't seem to help either. The carrots go bendy and soft, and get brown marks on the outside. Not particularly appetising! Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks very much.

sounds like they freeze then thaw to me... but i could be wrong...
i hav also had it happen i usually throw em in a pot roast if they do

I keep mine in the bag that they are sold in and put them in the bottom drawer of the fridge. They can usually keep for a few days without the problems you mentioned. I suggest you try this storage method. The dry and cool environment of the fridge will help to preserve your carrots for longer. Try getting organic ones --- they really taste better!

Do you have one of those machines that removes air and seals a product? Vacu-seal I think they call it. I know will keep food longer. If there is air in the bag they are in, it'll make it go bad faster. With my vacu-seal I can even get onions to last months. Hope it helps

We keep ours at the bottom of the fridge in a carrya bag,they last a week or more.

well do not under any circumstances take them out of the plasctic, always fold them away in a neat bag. mine last about two weeks in the fridge.

fridge is a cold and dry place, carrots still breath in it, and lost their water, it doesn;t matter for one day or two, \
if you want to turn it back, just dip it in water for a while before you want to cook it.

to cold ask the grosser at what temp. you should keep them and for how long.
then put a thomiter in the frig. and regulate it so it is not so cold (this can be done with newer fridges. look in to the manufactures info. for your frig..)

sounds like you are buying substandard produce by the way plastic bags are the worst thing you can put any food in it gos off faster
