My little girl just turned one in August. She has recently started to Stick her fingers in her mouth and choke herself. Is this a common thing? It has got to the point to were she is making herself throw up. I dont know what to do about it. I hear that some kids just like the feel of the gaging, but it seems weird to me. Has anyone else had this happen with there kids?

My 20 month old son does this all the time. He thinks it's so funny and actually makes himself throw up. I think it's more of a game because the kids know they can get a reaction out of the adult. I've gotten to the point where I won't even look at my son when he's doing it and it's actually working. He's starting to realize he can't get a reaction that way from me and he'll move on to doing something else naughty! Gotta love this age

My little boy (now 20 months) started doing the same thing at that age. It seemed so weird to me but I found out that it is quite common and can be just a natural part of them exploring their bodies and learning consequences. It actually shows that she is a naturally curious toddler- which is a good thing. Anyway, what you can do is try to distract her when you see her start to do it by giving her a favorite toy or otherwise occupying her hands. I used to keep a small bowl of interesting kitchen utensils (wire wisk, turky baster, etc.) nearby and I would grab one and hand it to my son when I saw him start to stick his fist in his mouth. It was enough to distract him from it and redirect him. He eventually grew out of it as he got busier with his playing. I hope this helps and good luck!

Get her checked out by her doctor. This is not normal for a 1 year old. I saw this story either on Oprah or on 20/20 type shows about a little girl who did this. Hopefully, it will turn out to be just a habit you'll have to get rid of but it's best to talk to your doctor when it comes to your kids.

I've only seen it happen with one kid, and it was due to the hysterical reaction the mother gave when the child would do it. Apparently it was how the child sought attention since mommy always tried to remove the hand or spoke to her etc. She finally calmed down and started ignoring it and the baby stopped.

My niece did that. Its very common, I asked her dr and he said ignore her and then clean up the throw up. He said she is exploring and also using it as an attention getter. If she gets a response from you she wins.

Liz did it for about a month and then stopped. I promise your little girl will too

If she were to dip her finger in some seman then push her finger right inside herself then there is a tiny chance but other than that no chance

Hi there- nothing to worry about to much- it'll pass soon. 2 of my little ones used to do it. scared the heck outta me!My son didn't like the taste of pickles so when he started doing it bad, we'd put pickle juice on his hands... he'd keep his fingers out of his mouth. If it gets worse or if she does it constantly, just talk to your doctor. Hope then best for you and your little one
