I feel more loyalty to Turks and to Turkey than to my own country (Canada). Here is why:
After knowing me for a month or so, the grocer who owned the shop in our building in Sirinevler became highly protective - so much so that he scared the cr@p out of a male teacher that he thought had stood me up and left me waiting in Bakirkoy. Poor guy. The grocer grabbed him by the lapels and screamed at him. He had only been in Istanbul for a day.
Turks care. They are passionate. They always have an opinion and love a good argument. They won't let logic get in the way of a good argument ;)
I am biased. I married a Turk. Can you blame me? I have done some travelling, but Turks (and some others in the Mediterranean) are some of the most beautiful people on the planet. My husband looks like a live statue of David - broken nose and all.
About the political issue - I want to clarify a point that an ignorant poster made above re: the Armenian issue. I doubt very much that Irmak believes that 1.5 million Armenians died of sickness in their 'relocation'. Many did die of sickness, sadly, and I doubt that the Turkish equivelent of the Red Cross was called in (as it didn't yet exist). I do not believe it was genocide, and not because I am invested in this issue in any way, shape or form. I deeply resent the fact that ignorant people (and by ignorant I mean the original definition of the term, as in, 'not knowing' as opposed to intentionally being rude) are lobbying hard to affix the genocide label to Turkey.
Why perpetuate this culture of victimization? Why make Turkey the bad guy (there are too many other examples of state-sponsored acts that resulted in intentional death of various ethnic groups, notably native american and aboriginal, but we don't press the 'genocide' label on those perpetrators, do we?)
Too long Turks believed that 'an innocent man does not need a lawyer' and have not defended themselves; this has resulted in a successful lobby against them.
What do I think of Turks? I love their passion. I love Kemal Sunal and Cem Yilmaz. I think they have a great sense of humour. I think that they are also fixated on material goods moreso that other people. But I also think they are striving for perfection and hold themselves up to very high standards.

I am Greek
for centuries Turkey and Greece have been the worst enemies
Pontos, Cyprus, Istanbul, izmir, Marmaris
are some of the lands that once belonged to Greece but now to Turkey
many fights
many wars
many people killed
both sides are taught to hate each other
and yes i admit that we still have many differences many things to be solved-
so many things are between us - separate us
but i must also admit that there are many things that bring us together-
Both our countries are connected to each other
same history
same cousin
same music
and even common words
are a strong bound
so much different and so much alike, Greece and Turkey will go on making history with their own unique way
but on the end i must add
fanaticism and politics is 2 basic factors that create hate, terror, wars and bring dichotomy to people
the simple people of both countries are very openhearted with strong beliefs, like celebrating a lot, easy going, hospitable....and so much more
Best Regards to all

Turks as a people is a good people, looking the family, patient, who did not decide yet if they are a European or Asiatic nation. As a country they do not have yet a strong middle class except the 3 large cities which are overpopulated ,and that is why they have a very prototype Democracy where army shares power, and we all know that where the army has opinion ,freedom is not full
My dear Irmak now will tell me that this happens Because of terrorist Kurds, and already told that the Armenians 1,5 million people got sick and died during a cruise by the Ottomans, but what about the Greeks of Istanbul.Where are 300000 people?
And what about the freedom of religion? Is the magnificent Byzantine church of St Sophia a church or a fashion show place?
Will they welcome now the Pope visiting the Patriarch?
I say that again .The people is good but I cannot accept lies

The few that I have known have been quite friendly and pleasant. I hear nothing but good things about the people from guests who travel to Turkey.
Yet, the culture and the government are not ready for European Union membership.
