If you're looking to bring back cultural gifts, head over to Dongtai Lu antique market or the Yu Gardens. You'll find all the little trinkets you can find, but be sure and bargain hard! They will see a 'laowai' (foreigner) and try and rip you off. I would say "Tai guai la" (pronounced "tie guay la" - meaning "Too expensive!") as soon as they say their price and suggest 1/4 of what they originally said. Never rise more than Y10 on your offer at a time, no matter how high they start. Usually they will whip out a calculator or you can bring your own for negotiating, so don't worry about the language barrier. May I recommend jade and pearls and silk and purses for women (google them to find out how to tell fakes from real, or email me at calindi15@yahoo.com) and old coins and swords and fun patterned ties for men and boys. Cultural clothing is also a really fun gift - maybe a silk bathrobe! You can bring swords or knives home in your checked baggage, if you were concerned.
If you want something really cool for yourself, I would suggest going to 399 LuJiaBang Lu, located south of the Bund. It's the fabric market, and you can have traditional Chinese dresses and shirts made exactly to your measurements within 3-4 days, or you can have them make something more modern using Chinese fabric (say a cool suede jacket with an embroidered silk lining, like I bought). They also have cool ties and little bags and purses and such here made out of fun fabric. Definitely worth a trip! I have been living in Shanghai several months and have spent way too much time at the fabric market wasting money. You can have really anything you want made (if it's not insanely complicated). I am having two full suits made (I picked the fabric and brought in pictures for the designs) and have had dozens of button down shirts made. The suits were Y375 each, and never pay more than Y70 for a woman's button down shirt - that's less than $10 in the US, you can bet I'm buying a ton since they're made in any style I want with any fabric I choose! Best way to shop, in my opinion!

I am an American living in Shanghai. The black market moved to a new location, 580 Nanjing Road. You can find lots of great gifts, purses, watches, scarves, jewelry, all in one building. There are lots of "back street" shopping off of People's Square too.

agreed! Nanjing road and Waihai road are both popular destination for shopping. People Square are also most tourist destination. Eat chinese food and buy some goodies but be careful of you stuff. Take a good care of your things everywhere, whenever you are in China. If online i know some goodies web like www.iluvgoodies.com. The products are pretty nice.

There are a lot of wholesale markets throughout China. However, they generally specialises in certain range of products such as electronic, consumer goods such as lady's accessories, car accessories, clothings, etc etc etc. You will have to narrow it down a little bit more by categories, otherwise it would be difficult to recommend as they are located at different places in different cities.
