Using guilt or emotion against someone to make them feel badly enough to do what you want, against their own wishes.
Example ... a husband and wife ... wife wants husband to take her out that night, the husband isn't feeling well and says no. She responds with something like "well if you loved me enough" ... husband feels badly and takes her out anyway.
That's an example of emotional blackmail, but it happens in all types of relationships, not just spouses. Parent to child, child to parent, relative to relative, friend to friend, etc. It's another form of playing head games and should be avoided at all costs, if only to preserve your own dignity.

If you ask me this question again, I swear I will go and hang myself, or probably use the gun thats in my drawer, or cut myself....say that you wont do it again, or else, i would, i swear i would....
I think thats what emotional blackmails are, and that too if the person who is saying that really knows you well, knows your weaknesses...I think. The emotional blackmails I have come across in my life are usually from my mom (ofcourse, not like how I have worded it there, she does it in a very sweet way). Mothers are famous for that, to get you in the right way, to correct you....Lol!! I wouldnt know whether you or your freind is facing a situation from some source, but it can be extremely stressful...someones already given you the right definition too, in here....
Hey, I forgot to mention this, but talking about emotional blackmail, I had to face that a couple of days back, from an uncle to whom i am really really attached to, who is having a financial mess, created thankfully by him, and his family's extravagant ways...however, the line goes ''''if i cannot get hold of this money (amount '$$$$'), i have no choice but to suicide along with my family''......its terrible, you dont want to help cos' you know that its not for a good cause, and then if you dont help, you feel terrible thinking of an entire family, trust me, it annoys me, and i am still not going to budge....this time, let me see how far it goes....will let you know if the suicide really did happen!!!

Emotional blackmail is a powerful form of manipulation in which people close to us threaten (either directly or indirectly) to punish us if we don't do what they want. At the heart of any kind of blackmail is one basic threat, which can be expressed in many different ways:

emotional blackmail is when someone is laying a guilt trip on you because their very very very insecure and miserable and can't see people being happy and moving forward in life. they want to drag you down to their depth of misery but never, never, never allow them to.

It is when a love one never tells you what's the reason why he/she is angry with you and keeps on ignoring you. It makes you think and ask yourself what you've done wrong.
