At his age, that last thing to worry about is being fat. He should have all that he wants to eat, of a high quality kibble, 3 times per day, or free-feed all day..
Watching his weigh will begin at about 2 years old, but don't restrict food until then.

(at 8 months old, he will be eating about twice the amount he will as an adult, so don't get worried)

On the side of the dog food container.....there is a weight chart which tells how much to feed your dog at what weight and age.

don't worry about getting fat....he's a growing boy...needs to eat extra till full grown....check instructions on bag or can
