ALWAYS KEEP TRACK OF YOUR CREDIT SCORE... THE FICO NUMBER.
Don't take out more than two credit cards, pay them off RIGHT NOW... DO NOT LET CREDIT RUIN YOU LIFE.
Learn as much about credit as you can... it means more than you imagine right now.
It's used by landlords that rent, in buying a new or used car, homeowners, even employers have looked at FICO scores, etc, etc.
When you get a job, build up a list of REFERENCES.
References are the HOLY GRAIL of employment.
Even if you get a crappy job, as long as you keep a list of good references, you can easily bail out and get a better job.
Try to get a government job or a job with a utility company if you can... they have the best benefits.
If you go into the military, get into anything medical, as in nursing, radiology, etc.
Parole officer would be a GREAT job also.
And four years in the military will give you health care for life.
Perhaps you want to wait for Iraq to be over, and it will... soon.
Perhaps your parents or their friends can help you get a good first job.
Start putting money away for retirement from your VERY FIRST paycheck... make it a habit, even if it's $50 a month.

Well, the first step is to find a job so that you can pay rent and afford to live on your own. You weren't clear as to why you feel there is a barrier there. Your family is probably worried about you since you moved out without having a job.

Either get a job, save some bucks and go for it, or find a nice big cardboard box in an ally behind some restaurants so you have your own place and some nice dumpsters to scrounge for food(BTW the Army is looken for a few good men, you might give them a visit!)

Stay with your parents and first get a job then you can leave. Otherwise find out if they could help you pay your bills before you get yourself a job. For all you know they already wanted you out.

Without a job, you won't be going far. Your parents should keep a spare bedroom available.
