The open championship is always played on a links course because of tradition.
The very first golf courses in the world were links courses because of there almost natural layout like sandbased turf and natural bunkers.
Links courses are also considered by many to be the only "true" test of golf requiring you to play a huge variety of shots in generally gruelling wind conditions.
Therefore it makes sense to keep the open at a links as its very "British".

Because those are the types of courses indiginous to the British Islands. They have few trees like we have here in the States and their turf is very different. They play the long open treeless course style, links, while in the US we play more of a shorter cut from the woods style course layout. Basically it is because of the terrain the courses were built on.

The tournament (corrrect title "The Open Championship") is played on a links course because it always has been. No other reason. It always will be too - unless Hell freezes over.

Well you could hardly play it on the local course down the road can you. On a links course you have a better view of the play and the holes will be more demanding than those on a normal course.
