why were the references to it in the bible so indirect. Instead of just stating that sodomy is a sin, various terms have been used and interpreted by people to mean homosexuality.

Yes, I know about Sodom and Gomorrah but what I want to know is why use obtuse words like effemenate when a more concise word would have removed the need for interpretation which is often incorrect

The Bible and it's many interpreters have gotten plenty of things wrong just as they have gotten this wrong, homosexuality is a normal human variation like height or IQ, our sexual orientation cannot be chosen whether straight or gay and is fixed probably from birth, certainly very early in infancy.
It is not a crime to be gay, gay relationships between consenting adults are not abusive and usually quite the opposite, gay people are usually peaceful they don't start wars and conflict, most gays are fine people. Just as with heterosexuals you get some who are promiscuous and some who are prostitutes as well as those who settle down in committed relationships. All gays are different just as all straights are different.
What the Bible was talking about and the motivation behind the very few Bible comments made is impossible to fathom nowadays and we should take it with a pinch of salt and refrain from giving convenient and facile interpretations that can be so devastating to gay peoples lives, it's a matter of using some sense and sensitivity.
Of course if you are using the Bible as a weapon in a fight to assert your own prejudices that's another matter entirely, and I think this is what we see happening most of the time with the constant defaming of gay people and the attempts to stop gay civil rights equality by misquoting Bible scripture..

KJV, which you are reading, uses the cultural language of the 17th century England. Read Leviticus 18.22 and 20.13. Also Romans 1.26-32. Homosexuality comes from, and creates, the reprobate mind.

it is clear, but the way people translate from hebrew to english, i suppose they just decided to use big words instead of just putting it out there. homosexuality is a sin, just as sex before marriage, lying, stealing, coveting, and murder are. if someone is gay they aren't really any worse of a christian than those that lie or have sex before marriage, but they have to repent just like the others to be forgiven. no sin is greater than any other. my lying and and killing someone is the same to god.

It sounds very direct to me:
Romans 1:27 and likewise even the males left the natural use of the female and became violently inflamed in their lust toward one another, males with males, working what is obscene and receiving in themselves the full recompense, which was due for their error.
