Well ,first of all you have to remember that the Bible is a book of moral science. It is not a book of science The Bible was written somewhere in 600BC, it would have been very difficult to explain things to man at that time about single celled animals. And Darwinism has its flaws too because I.D has scientific proof now.So St Augustine was right, probably inspired I'd say.
St Augustine does not in anyway contradict the Bible. The Big Bang theory brings science and religion closer.

"What part of Creationism gives you a problem? At least 3 billion people believe that God Created the universe."
At one point in history, the population of Europe believed the world was flat, and that Earth was the centre of Universe - and look how that turned out...
My view has always been that the Bible is a theological text, not a literal account of events... (Then again, I'm at the Aetheist/Agnostic end of the spectrum.)

I have always been a fan of Maimonides in this respect
"Some medieval philosophical rationalists, such as Maimonides held that it was not required to read Genesis literally. In this view, one was obligated to understand Torah in a way that was compatible with the findings of science. Indeed, Maimonides, one of the great rabbis of the Middle Ages, wrote that if science and Torah were misaligned, it was either because science was not understood or the Torah was misinterpreted. Maimonides argued that if science proved a point, then the finding should be accepted and scripture should be interpreted accordingly"

The bible has been rewritten by many monks and there are so many additions and such. There's documentary video on google titled : Who Wrote the Bible? Is the Bible the Word of God? Why is the Bible full of Contradictions? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2061773048178434620&q=%22who+wrote+the+bible%22&hl=en
Probably that's why Quran came later. But that won't satisfy our quench for truth as an essential part of life.

The world is full of mysteries, from the atom to the soul.
No one on earth can have knowledge of the nature of anything visible as well as invisible.
The correct way is to humbly enter into education and humbly share our limited knowledge in our limited environment for a relative atmosphere of love, peace and progress.
The Messengers of the One True God are all-knowing, but still they remain patient in seeing us moving up by very little steps throughout long centuries.

Augustine is calling Jesus a liar. Because Jesus refers to the Genesis account several times. Augustine is not a good Christian role model, You should try the Apostle Paul or Charles Hadden Spurgeon. These men made good Christians.

The Bible in Genesis explains that we are born void and empty and have to learn everything. We have to be reformed in the understanding and regenerated in the will.
