It could be scar tissue from an old injury. You should have it surgically corrected because it won't get better on its own. See a doctor as soon as possible.

Knee locking is a classic symptom of a torn cartilage. Go and see your GP who will ask you some more questions then hopefully refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon. Have you injured it recently or did it just start gradually? A torn cartilage isn't always the result of an injury, sometimes it's just good old 'wear and tear'. An MRI scan would confirm this, but if an orthopaedic surgeon is convinced, based on your symptoms and clinical signs then they'd probably go ahead and do an arthroscopy (keyhole surgery to trim the cartilage). Good luck :)

Yes, I have the same. It is arthritis and there could be loose cartilege - but probably not. You can ask to have it investigated by a specialist. They will Xray first to check it is not bone and then look for cartilege. Keyhole surgery if it is - very easy - in and out in a day and recovery is fast.
In the meantime, are you taking Glucosamine and Chondroitin? I find that makes a lot of difference to my joints.
Good luck!

I had knee pain at 37... Everytime I went up the stairs, my knees would be in pain. It was corrected by a food supplement marketed by an MLM. There's a product with a component called arthred. Write me at jade_flowershop@yahoo.com about it.

The wonders of getting old my friend!!! I'm 37 and recently when walking down steps, my knees have started to hurt. It happens more in people who are or who have a sporty past. I was very athletic when I was younger and am paying the price now.
