Yes, it's cruel. And the dog may leave you some very unpleasant surprises if you leave him/her for that long.
Can you take him with you? Maybe find a hotel with a pet service?
Otherwise find a reliable boarding kennel in your town -- maybe your vet can recommend a place.
When you decide to own a pet, you are taking on responsibilities -- and that may mean cultivating boring friends who like your animal just so you can leave the pet with someone.
Here's an idea, though. Do you have any friends who have pets, and might be willing to swap three nights over Thanksgiving for three nights later in the year? Although, having someone else's pets and a bunch of relatives over Thanksgiving is not my idea of a good time.

Take your dog to the vet and kennel it.... The dog will have people around and company. Also will get fed, water and attention. leaving the dog at home alone, scared, no one around would not be in the best interest for your dog. Your dog could be trapped if a fire happened. It would cause alot of confusion for the dog. Call your vet now and see if they have room available for your dog. If not, call a few other places before they book up.

You should at least ASK your friends. Leaving your pet alone is NOT a good idea. Dogs get bored. If your friends can't watch him, then there are kennels that watch over pets. It's best to look at their sleeping arrangements, just in case your pet doesn't like crates and they use them. And don't be afraid to ask lots of questions (like do they get to go outside and play?).

you gotta ask someone! think of it, no food, no water, no owners! that is cruel! ask neighbors, family, or friends. to help them even futher, put the food for each meal in a separate ziplock. then in bottles, store the water for each change. write a list of things to do (if it has a accident, breacks something, rules, how to brush it's hair, what to play, etc.). this can help the watcher get less bored, have fun, and even be a bit eager to help out next time!

Take him to a boarding kennel or try your vet's office. Some of them also have boarding.
