definitely a small dog like others have said. Terriers are a good choice. But, if you're looking for one that really doesn't bark a dog called a Basenji would be great! They are a small dog, about the size of a red fox, they are barkless(not mute though) they do make other noises. As for shedding, they dont really shed, they have very short hair. They do very well in an apartment setting or small home. Please reserch this breed before getting one and decide if it's really what you want.

A miniature Pomeranian. They weigh at the most 4 pounds. Don't let their tiny size fool you. They have the attitude of a Great Dane. Mine even backs down Rottweilers! She is protective, and lets you know when anyone comes around before you even know. She is also very small so she doesn't require alot of room. Though she loves to go for rides in the car. She is a real people person, but she loves her time alone too. So I would have to vote for a miniature Pomeranian.

there is alot of dogs that are great and can adapt to apartmant life. i myself have dogs in my apartments. terriers can be a great breed of dog to have, but if you are a person with lots of spare time and you can have long runs in the park, any dog is okay.

We have a daschaund/cocker spaniel mix and a german shepherd. They both do really well in the apartment.
