That is a wonderful idea, and I wish you only the greatest of success. I've been thinking about doing the same thing myself. Where are you from? I'd put out ads in the papers in the section where the churches put them for free (lawsuit waiting to happen lol). Maybe an online forum for your town, or if your town has a community website for stuff like that. I think with patience it will definitely grow, as more and more people accept their disbelief is religion as we know it today. We need a place where we can bring our own "faith", if you will, because it is one of exploration and sharing of ideas. I would love to partner with you on this, email me same sn @ yahoo.com
WISE 1 - Count me in, you found one right here.

It's cool that you want to start an organization/community, but don't you think the whole going out to do good deeds mirrors the religious zealots too much? We're better off doing our own thing. It's the same as saying, "Hey! Look at me! I'm doing good things for you, so you HAVE to be an atheist now." It's perfectly fine and encouraged for you to do community things and help others, but not to further an agenda. I'm allowed to say that... I'm an atheist, too.
It's great to start some type of group for atheists so that we can just talk about issues and such... sort of like a club to discuss current events, injustices, propositions, ideas, petitions, etc., but not to copy the actions of fairy tale-believing crackheads.

This group is a fantastic idea! As far as getting the word out trust in fellow members spreading the news. Or you could try creating a web site. Be careful about flyers and such cuz you know it'll only bring the religious fanatics down on you hard. Word of mouth should be the only advertizing you'll need. Best of luck to you. Wish someone would do this in my area.

I was in a group of secular humanists. It was very small and they're now defunct. One thing they did was "Adopt a Highway" which meant once every 3 months they picked up trash in a section of the road and they got some free publicity. They also held an essay contest for high school students, with a $1000 prize for the winner.
Their area was fairly large - 3 counties. They added their name to the newspaper "Clubs and Gatherings" section.
You might try getting in touch with your local humanist association. Here is a link to see if there are any chapters near you http://www.americanhumanist.org/chapters/ (sorry, assuming you're a yank)

I do a lot of "home circles". People invite their friends to their home for a social evening where I talk to them. Then I ask those present if any of them would like to host a similar evening at their home with their friends. By the way! I'm not atheist but I still have things to offer. IT is a pity that you asked for answers only from atheists. Sometimes believers also have ideas.

I'd maybe have a Wine & cheese ceremony in a theater followed by a Projection of some videos......Some of the Richard Dawkins Videos are great, NOVA videos about science are good, have an agenda, for each / week:month that you meet.
Week 1: Wine & Cheese + Discussion of What an Atheist is + Video of Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion
Week 2: Wine & Cheese + Discussion of How you came to be atheist + Video of Brian Flemming's "The god that wasnt there"
Week 3: Wine & Cheese + Discussion of: Evolution + A video on The Earth and How it Came to be or Evolution.
etc
etc
etc
hope this helps... just put up flyers, tell friends & spread the word

A good idea is if your neighborhood doesn't have like the shiny numbers on the curb. You could tell people you'll do it for $1 (or more) as a fundraiser you're doing, and give them a small pamphlet of your Atheist club which is the one where all the benefits will go.

Sure, Would like to join. I think all you have to do is start a group here. Unless you are referring to a group in your community. Then I'm stumped.
