It seems to be the word applied to comedians whose faces are very mobile and whose features are contorted as part of their effort to make people laugh. One good example is Rowan Atkinson, who didn't say anything at all in his "Mr Bean" series, but nevertheless made people laugh all over the world. It is a humour which doesn't rely on subtlety of spoken language so much as the use of body language.
