Having the baby is the easy part. Its the remaining 17 or more years that are soooooooo stressing.
I say most important is to guide the child through love. To both give and recieve love is so important- it teaches empathy, acceptance, patience, tolerance, and kindness. Sure structure with discipline is important too- but if done through loving gestures you not only create obidiant children but loving ones too.
A great author on child raising is Dr. Barry T. Brazelton. I love his books and used to watch his tv show a long time ago. He talks about them like they are little people, which is what they are. Very interesting.
Good Luck.

you MUST HAVE the ability to put the kids interests ahead of any selfish needs for you..
that means stop at 1 kid if that is all you can afford.. (some people are selfish and want 2-3.. and cannot afford them financially or emotionally or timewise becuase they are at work too much)
buying a new car isnt as important as spending time with your kids
I do believe OWNING a home with a decent yard is a priority.. no kid wants to be raised in an apartment.. and kids should never be taken away from nature.. kids grow up so much better out in their back yards than stuck infront of a TV...

You need to know that sometimes life isn't all about you -- you need a selflessness that lets you put aside some of your needs and wants, and attend to the child's well-being.
And you need a sense of humor (-:. I don't know what I would have done without a sense of humor -- probably spent a lot of time crying in frustration.

The key thing a parent must have is the ability to be patient and understanding. No one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. Our job as parents is to guide them when they make mistakes, and be there to discipline them when they do wrong.

I agree patience is the number one must! Aside from that parenting classes wouldn't hurt. Spend time with other people you know who have children and observe how they act with their children. Determine what you do like verses what you don't like about how they interact with their children, adjust what you don't like, keep what you do.

I see your patience and consistency, and raise you an "unconditional love" and "constant forgiveness".
