Buying a yellow ribbon in not "supporting our troops". The yellow ribbon is just something that materialistic, self-absorbed consumers slap onto the side of their 8-miles-to-gallon SUV land yacht to make themselves feel better about the fact the government they elected (or that they are too lazy to oppose) is sending our troops to die for it's own agenda. This leads to the answer to your question: Fresh, young troops are great cannon-fodder for our corrupt government's self-serving agenda; veterans are no longer useful to the government, so they don't bother taking care of them. It's disgraceful, really. The current soldiers are volunteering to defend our country and, instead, are being used as political tools. And the veterans who served should well-treated for their service, not swept under the rug. Both groups are being abused. Sad...

It's easy to spend a few bucks on a ribbon magnet for your car for everyone to see, but how many of those people actually support the troops through their actions? How many of them have actually given serious thought to what the soldiers are going through? For the general public, support isn't about buying a sticker for the company to make a profit, it's about donating time and/or money to provide something as simple as a "good for you" letter to someone who might desperately need it. For the spouses and families left at home, it's more than that, it's about preserving the home they love and are fighting to come back to.
Yet I do realize that those who actually give to the troops give an overwhelmingly larger portion to those currently serving than those who are retired. And I agree that it's probably because they either don't personally know any vets or because the war in Iraq is so prominent of an issue.
At least when the vets stand outside our stores to collect pocket change, the funds go straight to the vets, not to a manufacturing company.

A yellow ribbon means nothing. If you really support the troops you must understand the sacrifice of our men an women all the way down to your core. The best way you could really understand the sacrifice is to look at the red stripes on the flag and realize that the very existence of our country is owed to all of the blood spilled by American men and women who put themselves in harm's way. Nothing is for free, everything has a price, including our nation's existence.

We support our troops because they are part of all of us now. Why we treat our veterans like crap? It would be for they simple reason that people have forgottem what they did and the news had a part in that. They took what they want to report (mostly bad stuff) and forgot to tell the rest of the story.

Not sure what you mean. I am a vet and a Vietnam vet primarily and am not treated badly by anyone. In fact, I am well-respected for my service, but live around lots of military folks primarily. The benefits a vet, and retiree has, are another story, however. While some are fine, others are not and knobdicking around Iraq forever while liberals whine about scum at places like Guantanamo doesn't help us either.

Penny Mae, We are told in the Bible that we are supposed to support our government no matter what our feelings. I do so completely. Our troops are totally volunteer which means that they are there for our benefit not because we force them to do so. I believe that makes them especially GREAT Men and Women! I will continue to pray for and support them in all of our efforts overseas and at home. Have a great week. Thank You, Eds .

As much as I love this country... that's got to be the biggest insult I can think of ( with regards to the treatment of our Vets ) No one wants to fix it... no one talks about it.. its never a political issue in any election... its an embarrassment to us all.
I have friends in the Gulf and a family full of vets ( Vietnam, Korea ) and I love all of them for what they do and the sacrifices they made so I can live in this country.

I think this is so messed up. Georgey pooh cut millions of dollars from our veterans heathcare. I saw the V.A. once with my hubby and it was like visiting a third world hospital. Holes in the floor and chairs ripped. Believe the minute he wasn't Marine anymore they cut him off so quick. Its so messed up. Serving or served treat em the same.
