The genre of this book is and autobiography. in the book it deals with a girl being severly teased throughout her life in and outside of school. In this book the setting is everything. Almost every type of abuse the main character endures throughout her life happens at her schools. When she describes what used to happen to her at school and the description of where in the school she is you can really relate to what is happening because you see it happen at your school all the time. The major theme in this book would be the need to fit in. Throughout the book Jodee the main character is desperately needing to be part of a group where she is wanted and accepted, but her leadership qualities always seem to set her back from becoming popular. Whenever she would get settled with new friends she would always want to do the right thing which they always found to be �uncool� and that�s what lead to her emotional and physical abuse. The need to fit in didn�t only come from Jodee but also from her peers. Jodee�s peer were always looking for ways to fit in and making themselves look cool by doing things that they knew deep down inside were wrong and just doing it to fit in and be like everyone else. The reason Jodee never fit in was because of her honesty and her always doing what was best for her. In this book the author likes to use foreshadowing and flashbacks. She will always make it clear that just as things are going better for her that soon things will be going downhill again. for example when she meets a new group of friends and is finally started to have fun and fit in, she will say that soon things will be back to the they used to be. The writer also uses a flashbacks a few times in the story like in the beginning she starts out with her at her highschool reunion and flashes back to her school days. By flashing it reveals to us how tough she really had it in school and how most of us have it so easy. The way the writer tells us about the events that took place in school she never holds anything back and makes us feel as if we are right there with her. Overall I really like this book I think the reason I liked it so much is because it made me realize how serious bullying can really become and can cause emotional, mental, and physical damage. This book always left me wondering what was going to happen next. It also would help others that have been or are currently being bullied to teach them to stand up for themselves and to show them that because they are strong now it will benefit them greatly in the future.

A Moving Book That Makes A Difference
I thought this book was an incredible book that should move a lot of students and help them with the tough times they deal with everyday. Jodee was just a normal girl who wanted to live her life the way she wanted without being teased or taunted or even abused, she never asked for it and the 'cool' kids don't understand the pressure it takes to fit in if you dont wear the right clothes or wear the thick rimmed glasses. Nobody deserves the pain she went through just to try and fit in so she wouldn't get hurt or teased everyday. The very few friends she had and kept, were real true friends that didn't doubt Jodee and liked her for who she was and she didn't have to try and fit in with them. Every now and than people tend to tease one of their peers about the way they dress or the huge zit on their face, but to Jodee that was an everyday thing that hurt her and almost drove her to death! For the people who taunted her and gave her their friendship afterward, finally realized how crude they were to her and saw how successful she was and apologized to her. Ms.Blanco should of lived her life happy as a child and young adult because now, she can never have those years back and thats all thanks to the people who made fun of her day after day after day for being too smart or being deformed and always being that know it all. So this book is recomended to every teenager that is going through a tough time and needs help.

EXCELLENT
This is an excellent book. Don't let other people tell you otherwise. They are probably just leaving bad reviews because their teachers made them read this book & they've never read another book in their life. In reading this book it really opens up your eyes to what is happening in schools & sometimes even teachers take part in this bullying.

Don't waste your time
This was a poorly written book about a girl who tried to fir in with the kids she considered 'popular' from elementary years through high school. It is ridiculously unrealistic and consistantly has a whiny 'they hate be because I'm gifted' tone. Throughout the book she talks about how she is morally on a higher level than her peers but then the next moment she is making fun of the underdogs to try to fit in with the 'in' crowd herself. She spends her life trying to become someone she's not to get accepted, all the while narrating that she knew exactly who she was and was proud of that. Maybe the girl would have had friends if she would just BE HERSELF and make friends with other kids in school, not just the people she considered to be the most popular. That way she wouldn't have written this painstaking novel that is thrust upon us today. Also...ending every other paragraph saying something like 'I thought the kids might not hit me with rocks tomorrow. I had no idea how wrong I would be...(dun dun dun)' is definitely abusing a writer's freedom of the use of foreshadowing. My entire High School read this book as a school-wide reading program in an effort towards unity. I must say it was very successful. I have witnessed many people who don't usually talk to each other making passing comments about how ridiculous this book is and laughing together. It's become a school-wide inside joke. THANK YOU MS. A Waste of School Funds
We have a promising program at school which involves the board picking one book for all of the high schoolers to read, so we're all 'bound together by a common thread' if you will. This year's book was terrible. It was a saint-fest about this 'tortured nerd/goodgirl/actress' and how the terrible people of her teen year made her life a living hell. Firstly, my middle school years were hell too. Like Miss Blanco, I was often under the physical and mental scorn of my classmates. Despite this I did have friends and in hindsight, I realize that I was stuck-up in middle school. Some of it I brought on myself. This woman however, pins the blame solely on her parents and the world. It's a hypocracy. My other personal favorite part is that the martyr sinks to her assailants' level and uses cruel stereotypes and descriptions to make her look even better. Me and my nerd friends didn't take too kindly... Save trees and the idea of literature itself- don't read this book

Good... but unrealistic
this book really is good. there are just some things that are really questionable. some things that are just completely unrealistic. this is supposed to be a true story but there are some events that happened in this book that must have have been embelleshed. i mean there is just no way that this whole story is real. some of the things that happened to this girl just doesnt make sense. she must be adding details to get sympathy or there must have been something wrong with her that shes just not telling us because the same thing happened at every single school she went to. the only difference was that the kids were different and the things they did varied slightly but it still had the same idea. i like the book and i do recommend it but if before you read it make sure you know that probably most of this story is made up. i'm sure that kind of thing happens all the time but i dont think it would to that degree of brutality. kids just don't hold a fellow student down and throw rocks at them. i never saw anything that cruel throughout my school years and besides this took place outside the school. where were all the teachers? if this really did happen they must have known what was going on but they would not just sit back and do nothing about it. they would have taken some action which they hardly ever did.

Incessant, annoying whining
Let me break this book down for you. It's about a girl who complains about not being accepted and being bullied all the time, and she wonders constantly why she doesn't fit in. She complains that nobody likes her. But in the midst of our trying to be sympathetic, we forget that she is trying to fit in with the 'in' crowd, not trying to be herself. She finds friends in the theatre group she is a part of. She has plenty of opportunities to make other friends. But she just whines and complains on every single page that she isn't accepted. I would be less of a person for sympathizing with someone who let something as stupidly farcical as this destroy 20 years of her life.

Oh, please....
This book rings untrue and reads like an updated version of a 'damsel-in-distress' fairy tale (sans prince of course grrrl power, anyone?) Blanco consistently depicts herself as a martyr throughout the entirety of the book. Seriously, it goes beyond a 'goody two shoes' attitude. As if bullying was validated if it was only the result of random targeting, Blanco writes herself as being bullied because she defended mentally disabled children, or deaf children, or abused children. I'm sorry, nobody is a martyr 100% of the time, and we are expected to believe that exactly when most girls are desperate to fit in (teen years, tween years) Blanco kept a stiff upper lip and NOT ONCE FOR A SINGLE SECOND thought, 'Gee. Maybe I should just try and fit in more.'? Please. In trying to paint a pleasing picture of herself, Blanco misses the point. Bullying is dangerous exactly because it makes people want to give up doing what is right in favor of doing what is popular, both the bully and the bullied. And the coda in which all the former little savages are transformed into wonderfully civilized adults? WRONG. Studies have proven that physically agressive bullies become physically agressive people later in life. I'm 16 and the people who learned to solve their differences in middle school through fistfighting still want to resolve their problems the same way senior year in high school. Graduating from the school in which they caused trouble didn't magically make them see the error of their ways. I picked this up 2 years ago because I was 14 and horribly bullied myself, Blanco makes herself out to be a saint on earth and thus made it impossible for me to identify her struggles with mine because...well, gee....I'm just teased 'cause I'm not fashionable..is it more laudable then to be teased because I'm a bleeding heart fetal pig activist? Grow up, Jodee, get over it.

One amazing, wondeful, moving book that I ever read!!!
This is the first book I read by Jodee Blanco. Is a wonderful story that shows how bulling can hurt a child's self conference. I think that every english teacher in middle school should make their students read this story as one of the mandatory books of the school year. Jodee Blanco with your writing you touched my soul. I would give it ten stars if I could. Amazing book!!!!!!!!

this book was a real good book... i dont read books but something about this on i just couldnt put it down....as soon as i read this one i was hooked.....my heart went out to jodee while i was reading this book..... its a real emotional book.......but i really enjoyed it...Jodee you are an AMAZING person...Keep being a strong person.....

Hmm...not sure about this book
I was really hoping this book would give a real treatment of bullying in schools. However, I feel as though the author really plays the victim card, and at times, I feel she is an unrealiable narrator. Also, I think the book is not written very well. There are times when I cringe at certain phrases and the flow of the book is often interrupted

sad, yet awesome book!
This book was so good! Kids were so mean to her, I don't understand how KIDS could do that to her! I loved how Jodee never tried to really hurt herself, even when things got tough. She did have breakdowns, but she stayed strong and the ending was totally worth it. I can't believe this book was REAL.

A WONDERFUL STORY ABOUT KIDS GROWING UP:
This story really touched my heart. I was once a victim of school bullying. I read this book in two weeks and every once in a while I had pictures in my head of myself and the kids who bullied me in high school and middle school. I really thought I was alone in the world of school bullying. It's really nice to know that there are hundreds of other people with the same experinces. The only way I made it through middle school and high school was the fact that I knew some day I would be better than those who were so mean to me and I would succeed in life. The truth is that there is a 'light at the end of tunnel, you just have to fight to find that light because when you do you will feel so good about yourself that all you want to is shine a like bright star in clear night sky.' Some day everybody will shine, but for those who were mean it might take them a little bit longer to find the right tunnel of success. This was a wonderful book and I highly recommend this story to everybody teachers, parents, family members, children of all ages, and those who are being bullied at school. To those who are being bullied in school right now, keep smiling, and keep searching for that tunnel because YOU will find it first and succeed like nobody else ever will. YOU TO CAN BE THE SHINNING STAR IN THE SKY. I AM ONE OF THOSE STARS AND IT FEELS SO GOOD AND PROUD TO KNOW THAT I OVERCAME A HORRIBLE SCHOOL EXPERINCE, BUT LIFE IS GREAT NOW THAT I CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE SEEING THOSE PEOPLE AGAIN WHO MADE MY LIFE SO MISERABLE. THEY ARE MISERABLE TODAY AND I AM SUCCESSFUL. THE WHEELS WILL SPIN AND YOU WILL BE LIKE ME SOME DAY. I DIDN'T BELIEVE IT EITHER, BUT IT'S THE TRUTH.

Hardly worth one star
This tale is highly narcissistic and without a moral. No moral, unless of course you consider revenge as a moral. Ms. Blanco fails to recognize that she is the common denominator in a story that is at best 'belly aching.' When she states that a cheerleader who had her lip gloss replaced with glue 'had it coming' because of her 'imperious' attitude--the message is that bullying is justified. As an educator there was little value in this book for young people experiencing bullying. There was, sadly, too much 'poor me.'

This book really touched me...
I loved this book so much for showing the harsh reallity of things. People need to know how others are being treated everyday. I could really relate to Jodee because I have went through all of that when I was in grade school. I give a lot of props to Jodee Blanco for writing that book and never giving up at life, I hope someday I can be like you.

How could people be so mean?
I just got this book yesterday from my public library. I was so shocked to see what Jodee had to go through, i am a 16 year old junior, and i have to go through some of that each and everyday, and it is hard. I think Jodee is my idol for living through that, i never could have.

I read this touching book in the beginning of 8th grade, when i came to class carrying the book my teachers called my mother and asked if she new what the book was about, my mom told her what had happened to me before i switched schools the past year and she had no idea.. although i did not go throw as much pain as Jodie i sincerely feel that every young girl should read this book, and most of all the girls who are the ones doing the picking and bullying. Now i am a 10th grade student and i know that this book will stay with me for my hole life. This book has tough me so much and showed me that i could move on from all my experiences.

A MUST READ FOR PARENTS, TEACHERS, AND STUDENTS
I saw this book on my teacher's desk and I wanted to read it. I was shocked how people could treat Jodee so badly. I too, am made fun by my peers and it has caused many emtional scars that I know that I will have for the rest of my life but what Jodee went through is much worst then what I have ever endurded. I think that schools should make students read this book for english class so that they can see what people go through after they are bullied.

A very good book
This was and is a very good book. Im only 14 but this book helped me. I look at other people with way more respect now. Knowing that she had to go thruogh all that stuff first hand. I thing it is very sad
