Make sure you don't do too much at once , you don;t want to rush it, make sure you get at least a few days in each place you visit.

Keep in mind that Australia is a big place so travelling to see things different states will take at least a day travelling (and getting to accom etc)
Some suggestions:
Explore Sydney and surround - Have ride on the manly ferry and go over to Manly Beach (You simply MUST sit at the beach and have fish and chips there - it is a very Australian thing to do), go up Centre Point Tower and see the whole city, Explore The Rocks area of Sydney ( a lot of history there), also go west of that and visit the Blue Mountains
A weekend trip from Sydney - go see Canberra, In mid - September, you can go to and visit Floriade (people come from all over the world to see this flower show - and it's free!), While in Canberra visit the National Museum - it is a MUST!
In Queensland - Surfers Paradise and the Gold Coast and the theme parks of course. If you can go further up north - go explore the tropical rainforests.
The twelve apostles in Victoria - hire a car and drive there frmo Melbourne - after you have visited the local art scene.
And that's just the East coast of Australia!!! If you still have time and energy and money - visit Uluru - the world's biggest rock - in the Northern Territory, see the aboriginal culture there

The weather will still be a bit on the cold side in September but further north you go the better the weather will be so you should try to go to the Great Barrier Reef http://www.greatbarrierreef.aus.net/.
Don't forget to go to the Australia Zoo http://www.australiazoo.com.au/
Sydney is probably a must for all overseas visitors - Sydney Harbour Bridge climb http://www.bridgeclimb.com/ - Sydney Opera House http://www.sydneyoperahouse.org/.
Melbourne still has a tram system http://www.visitmelbourne.com/ and a trip to Phillip Island http://www.phillipisland.net.au/penguinparade.html
May be consider taking an Oz Experience tour http://www.ozexperience.com/index.php
Well here is a start. Happy planning.

i did the east coast and the outback(ayers rock) then the south coast. i had 3 months to do it but try and do some of the east coast, the outback wasnt fab but still an experience, the great ocean road (adelaide to melbourne) was unreal. the national parks are gorgeous, byron bay is so gorgeous, cool and relaxed and just an hour inland from there is a cute little town called nimbin, famous for its cannibis!! theres also so much more, get yourself a lonely planet, they tell you absoloutely everything!!
i saw everything there from koalas to humpbak whales, amazing time, enjoy it!! oh and you have to scuba dive in the reef!!
