The best thing is to apply several places for money for college. All these sources are free to use and apply for each source. Overall, there are seven sources to locate scholarships and college financial help in paying the tuition bills.
First, apply in January or early February at FAFSA.ed.gov for the upcoming fall semester or now for the Spring 2007 semester. It will help you tap into need based financial assistance with the federal government and the college itself.
Second, search via Google.com or Yahoo.com for your state's college grants because some states have a website devoted to it. If your state is not one of them, search your state government's website to locate it. This is also need based. This can be pretty quick to hear back from them after you apply.
Third, if you are a current high school student, your high school guidance office has a list of local scholarships that you can apply for consideration.
Fourth, the college financial aid office and website have a list of private scholarships available from companies and organizations. Sometimes, your college major's information page might have a list of scholarships, too. This will take time though to hear back once you apply for consideration.
Fifth, search Google.com and Yahoo.com for scholarships based on your college major, ethnicity, and religion. This will take time though to hear back once you apply for consideration.
Sixth, go to the local library and look at the scholarship book. There are scholarships out there that are not listed on the web. This will take time though to hear back once you apply for consideration.
Finally, join several free membership scholarship search websites. Some scholarships might be listed on one but not another source. Most are updated on a regular basis. All offer a customized search based on the information you put into them. This will take time though to hear back once you apply for consideration.
Good luck!

Check out the Pell Grant, and fill out an online FAFSA. Check the web sites of schools you are applying to, or check with your schools financial aid department, they will have info on scholarships.
