Look at the the Long Beach Airport on a map. (on Yahoo! maps - the hybrid view) There is a square of taxiways that the planes use to get to/from the terminal. Three of the taxiways have "Long Beach Airport" painted on them. (Why not on all four - I don't know.)

Anyway, there are also roads that go under the runway and this visually helps pilots to see where the airport is and where landing is appropriate. This is not to help pilots figure out which airport they are approaching. Anyone that has flown before can tell the difference between a little airport like LGB and a mega airport like LAX.

There are many airports in a small area around LGB. Putting the information in large letters helps keep pilots from landing at the wrong airport.

And while it is true, as the gentleman below stated, that it is unlikely a pilot would mistake LGB for LAX, the same cannot be said for smaller airports in the region such as Fullerton, Compton or SNA.

As for his answer, it doesn't make much sense. Why should marking the taxiways be necessary if the objective is to keep pilots from landing in the wrong place? Runway markings are standardized; that's what pilots are looking for.

Many airports in California have mnames painted on them somewhere. In LGB's case, the name is painted there to minimize confusion by pilots as to shich of the neighboring airports one is looking at. Los Alamitos, Compton, Torrance, Fullerton, and Hawthorne are all very close and to an untrained eye there may be some confusion. But if you paint "LONG BEACH" in huge letters on the airport, perhaps then the student pilots will know which airport they are looking at.

Great question, never knew LGB had that.

My guess would be to either to mark the airport, or for decoration, like "Hey, we're Long Beach and we're proud!"

I doubt it's advertising... who would it be advertising to? You can't see it from the 405.
