Newborn puppies should always be born inside the house and stay there until they go to a home at 10 weeks old.

For the first week of life puppies need to be together in a box or with mother in a whelping box and the temperature should be about 85 to 90 degrees.
Week two you drop it to 80-85 degrees.

Bring them inside immediately and the mother too. Make hot water bottles and put them in a box with towels on top, then put the puppies on that.

It is very common to lose puppies because of natural causes, but I'm sorry to say, it sounds like you have lost those puppies due to negligence and inexperience.

If you lose the entire litter you need to bring the mom to the vet and find out how to deal with that, she will be depressed.

Did she put all the puppies out of the doghouse or just the dead ones? Usually, the mom will put the dead ones away from the living ones. Sometimes she might even put them to one side even before they're dead, almost like she knows there's something wrong. There could be several reasons why they died, though I don't think it was from the cold. Only a veterinarian could tell you for sure. But the mom dog knew what she was doing. <*)))><

Take the dog and the pups to the Vet - you cannot put a new mother and puppies outside - keep them in the house

Usuallly when the dogs whelp in the fall or winter months and they havent had litters yet (inexperienced moms), they like to lick them clean and thats probably why she put them in the grass. If her dog house is also too small, she knows there wont be any room for them to grow up. It is preferable that you relocate mom and pups to a warmer place such as a corner in the garage or your basement., even the kitchen.. She will come and nurse her pups there and she will know that you accept the extra mouths to feed. Make sure you increase her rations too as she is nursing, give her more variety of food.

Is this her first litter? She may not know what to do with them. Prepare a "litter box" inside your home, with soft bedding in a warm room. She should have room to turn around and lay down w/o laying on the puppies. The edge of the box should be enough to keep them in for a week or two, but low enough that she can get out when she needs.

It's cold outside and you didn't bring her into the house to have the puppies? Call the vet to see what can be done. I pray it's not too late for the other two. I'm sorry, but this is all your fault.

dogs (mothers exspecally) Know if there is something wrong with there pups, I had a cat who did the same thing, turned out that not all there nerves system was there, The vet told me they no and will try not to take care of them, kinda like saving themselves the pain you know. I am sorry they passed though and hopefully the other 2 are doing well

Did the dog ever see a vet? She should have been in the house with her pups. You should call the Vet now and have the pups checked to see if they are OK. They need to be kept warm and dry when they are first born - not outside.

If she is moving them away and they are dying she may be moving them away because she knows that they are going to die. We had a Golden retriever growing up who only had one litter of puppies, 4 out of 5 of them died. Most of them were not fully developed. We weren't sure if this had anything to do with the fact that she was already 4 or 5 years old and had never carried a litter or if something was just wrong. She would one by one move them to a corner of the yard behind a bush and leave them, going back to check on them. Like I said eventually all but one of them died. The one that lived she left in the bed with her. He was fully developed, healthy and fine. And both were left outside. I believe she would have kept them with her and tried to keep them warm enough if they were healthy and they would have survived. Many people, including my father, do not believe in inside pets, but I do, I would bring them inside or like someone else said at least make sure they have a warm comfortable place to lay. Even though my dad did not bring our dog inside she was on a porch with a bed and warm blankets. Good luck with the two little ones and sorry for your loses.

sorry for your loss, perhaps a book on dogs would help with answers. There are ways to keep animals warm in winter if you dont want to bring them in the house. I would also check the dog house for a reason she wont take them in there. ie. snake or other animal.
