It depends on the Order. Most take vows of celibacy, obedience and poverty. Benedictines take vows of obedience, stability (to one place) and conversion of manner. The last one includes many things including celibacy and poverty. Nuns live in community and own all things in common. They have a leader, called an Abbess, and she is seen as Christ in the community. Each Order has a book of Rules that they all follow. The Benedictine follow the Rule of St. Benedict.
Many people confuse the term sister with nun and think they are all the same thing. A nun, correctly, is a women who lives in a cloistered community. A sister is one who is part of a Mendicant order, like the Franciscans.
