They may very well be one of the strongest, however I think there are stronger. Pound for pound, a "bully" breed (AMSTAFF, Bulldog, APBT) is much stronger. In weight pulling competitions these dogs can pull over 11x their weight. (record of a 65lb American Bull dog pulling over 6 000lbs in competition).

I wouldn't say so. Pound for pound, in my experience, Pit Bulls are among the strongest dogs. The Sarplaninac is an average sized large dog, not a giant. I would estimate that any of the Mastiff related breeds (St. Bernards, Newfies, Mastiffs, Bull Mastiffs, etc.) would be stronger than the Sar, who is only 22 - 24 inches, 55 - 80 pounds.

I haven't even heard about this breed before, but the quick research I did on them didn't indicate any enormous strength. Rather, they are a flock guardian and herd dog.
